Bookmyshow: How an idea conceived in South Africa went on to become one of the most recognizable brands in India.

In today’s fast pace world, nobody has time to stand in long queues for purchasing tickets for their favourite movies, plays, events etc. In this digital age booking of tickets is just a click away and leading this digital revolution is the bookmyshow website. Bookmyshow is the market leader and the place to go if you want to purchase tickets for any movies, concerts, sports events etc. Bookmyshow eliminates having to invest time in physical purchasing tickets which many times aren’t available due to overbooking or are being resold at a higher rate in black.

Bookmyshow is the brainchild of Ashish Hemrajani who is an MBA graduate. In 1999 he was working for an advertising firm and while holidaying in South Africa he came across a radio commercial for the purchase of some rugby tickets. He could not get out the idea of replicating this model in India and solving the problem that many people were facing at that time. He quit his job the very next day and the rest, as they say, is history.

However, the journey towards the spectacular success that has been achieved by bookmyshow today wasn’t smooth sailing. Coming back to India, Ashish along with his friends Parikshit Dar and Rajesh Balpande founding Go4ticketing.com which was India’s first entertainment ticketing firm. However, their success could not last long as they faced many fundamental problems like the Indian market not being ready for an internet-based business due to lack of access to the internet and almost none credit card usage. However, they weathered the storm and re-launched their company in 2007 with the name bookmyshow.com.

The company attributes its success to just one factor i.e. that they are customer oriented. When bookmyshow was launched in India it was a concept that was one of its kind and hence led to almost 21 competitors cropping up, making the market highly competitive. However instead of looking at their competitors and trying to replicate their business strategies, bookmyshow focused on the wants and needs of their customers. They worked day in and out to give their customers better services and experiences. Their only goal was in innovating new ideas to keep their customers

satisfied. And they have succeeded in a remarkable way which is reflected in the brand that bookymyshow has become.
